Synthetic turf can get warm, whether you are located in a location that stays warm year-round or only during the summer. It might arguably be one of the biggest drawbacks of a synthetic surface. When a artificial turf surface is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods of time, it can get hot and take some time to get cool. But due to much research and testing, Southwest Greens has the answer — Hydrochill.

WHAT IS HYDROCHILL?

Hydrochill is a groundbreaking technology that is added to the turf's infill that uses the science of evaporative cooling. This process works in the same way as how sweating cools you. As the artificial turf is warmed by the sun (solar radiation), moisture that’s already there in the surface treated with Hydrochill is released to remove the heat and leave a cooler, more comfy surface.

HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

Ambient heat outside does not wholly control surface temps. After a while, the sun’s angle, solar radiation (sunlight), wind, cloud coverage, and several other elements influence the surface temperature. Hydrochill employs water to offer a cooling effect. This moisture comes from rainfall, dew, or irrigation to maintain an artificial grass surface chill for days, depending on weather conditions. It gives its biggest benefit during the hottest time of the day.

Based on both lab and outdoor lawn thermocouple examination, Hydrochill has reached 30 - 50 degrees cooler surface temperatures than conventional turf systems. More tests were executed by a FLIR-Certified Thermographer utilizing the most sophisticated camera images and technology. Forward-Looking Infrared readings indicate just how much Hydrichill cools the surface, pictured below.

This innovative technology comes in two types — as an applied spray and as a pre-coated sand infill. Both are similarly effective at cooling the surface. Hydrochill will naturally retain moisture and is activated by sprinkler systems or an easy spray from your garden hose. It is non-toxic and doesn’t have adverse environmental effects.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

LESSENS HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

The CDC says heat stroke and heat exhaustion can be very unsafe. Heat exhaustion is the human body’s answer to extreme loss of water and salt — ordinarily while sweating. Heat stroke is even more dangerous, that takes place when the body can no longer control its internal temperature, causing sweating systems to collapse. An artificial turf cooling system helps to decrease these ailments by diminishing the surface temps.

MORE COMFORTABLE

Even if it’s not a swelteringly hot and sunny day, synthetic turf temps can still get warm enough to feel uncomfortable. Hydrochill will work constantly to ensure your artificial yard at a lower temp if you live in a weather system that has history of recurring rain. If you live in a dry environment, a quick rinse every couple of days will ensure it is operating perfectly. It will be furthermore ease for both kid’s and puppy feet.

BETTER PLAY

If you’re considering Hydrochill for an athletics field, it’s one of the most important investments you can make. Humidity and heat could create problems for athletes by raising their body temp too much and resulting in dehydration. When synthetic grass is cooled using an advanced technology like Hydrochill, athletes will perform better by positively affecting their stamina.
